P3 ENGAGE Mentoring
“If you cannot see where you are going, ask someone who has been there before.” — J. Loren Norris
Professional Experiences and Networking
Applications for the 3rd cohort will open in Spring 2025
Overview
Recognizing that mentorship has the potential to fuel professional growth, P3 ENGAGE, a 12-month program, compliments the supports that students receive at their universities by connecting doctoral students with renowned scholars for career development and research guidance. P3 ENGAGE mentors have supported students by offering personalized academic and career guidance, helping them navigate pivotal milestones like dissertation defenses, job interviews, and career planning.
The goals of P3 ENGAGE are to provide students with the opportunity to:
Develop authentic relationships with leading scholars outside the student’s program area of study.
Explore opportunities to advance cultural and linguistic competence as guiding principles within behavioral and social science research.
Receive feedback on research processes, methodologies, theories, and products.
Learn about relevant resources related to their research areas of focus.
Expand their professional network to facilitate career growth.
Concurrently, doctoral students accepted and matched with a mentor are expected to actively participate in the program. Accepting this opportunity requires time and commitment. This means that mentees must:
Be proactive. Take initiative in outreach to schedule meetings, set agendas, and follow-up on discussion points from the last meeting.
Be prepared. Come to meetings with questions, updates on progress, and topics to discuss.
Be open. Share goals, successes, and challenges at one’s own comfort level. Transparency can help build trust and allows mentors to provide more relevant and effective feedback.
Be mindful. Show up to meetings promptly and provide sufficient time if you need to reschedule.
Be receptive to feedback. Feedback provides an opportunity to grow and learn.
